چکیده

A failure assessment method of stay cables containing fractured wires is presented through an example of an existing bridge. The wires constituting the stay cables of the bridge contained many initial defects that were formed during the rolling process of these wires. Despite moderate loading, fatigue cracks started to grow from these defects, increasing their size, and finally resulting in fracture of the remaining ligament of the wires. A probabilistic model is put forward for assessing the resistance of the stay cable based on a fracture mechanics model of the individual wires. A Bayesian update method is presented for estimating the distribution of initial defects based on the inspection of fractured wires. The calculated reliability of the stay cables of the examined bridge was lower than acceptable. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Low Cycle Fatigue Simulation of Valve Bridge Region in Cylinder Head Based on Critical Plane Model

The reason of this study is low cycle failure of cast iron cylinder head during the E5 standard durability test. The goal of the present investigation is durability test simulation and low cycle fatigue life evaluation of cast iron cylinder head. With uncouple structural analysis, preloads, thermal and mechanical load and boundary conditions are prescribed to finite element model of the cylinde...

Probabilistic Fatigue Life Prediction of Bridge Cables Based on Multiscaling and Mesoscopic Fracture Mechanics

Abstract: Fatigue fracture of bridge stay-cables is usually a multiscale process as the crack grows from micro-scale to macro-scale. Such a process, however, is highly uncertain. In order to make a rational prediction of the residual life of bridge cables, a probabilistic fatigue approach is proposed, based on a comprehensive vehicle load model, finite element analysis and multiscaling and meso...

Investigation on Deck-Stay Interaction of Symmetric Harp Cable-Stayed Bridge

This paper provides a variety of viewpoints to illustrate the mechanism of the deck-stay interaction with the appropriate initial shapes of cable-stayed bridges, which is validated by a symmetrical structure. Based on the smooth and convergent bridge shapes obtained by the initial shape analysis, the one-element cable system (OECS) and multi-element cable system (MECS) models of the symmetric h...

Monitoring and Failure Analysis of Corroded Bridge Cables under Fatigue Loading Using Acoustic Emission Sensors

Cables play an important role in cable-stayed systems, but are vulnerable to corrosion and fatigue damage. There is a dearth of studies on the fatigue damage evolution of corroded cable. In the present study, the acoustic emission (AE) technology is adopted to monitor the fatigue damage evolution process. First, the relationship between stress and strain is determined through a tensile test for...

Static and Dynamic Characteristics of a Long-Span Cable-Stayed Bridge with CFRP Cables

In this study, the scope of CFRP cables in cable-stayed bridges is studied by establishing a numerical model of a 1400-m span of the same. The mechanical properties and characteristics of CFRP stay cables and of a cable-stayed bridge with CFRP cables are here subjected to comprehensive analysis. The anomalies in the damping properties of free vibration, nonlinear parametric vibration and wind f...
